What if we were still in Iran?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The questions seem to hang in the air, creating a lull in an hours-long dinner conversation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Three Iranians \u2014 a married couple, Iliya and Naghme, and a guy who goes by Fred \u2014 sit at a backyard picnic table in a suburb of Birmingham. They\u2019ve eaten their fill, but there are still plates full of grilled steak kebabs and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eGw8bRFJMsY&amp;t=9s\"><em>sangak<\/em><\/a>, Iranian whole wheat flatbread. The Iranians share the latest phone apps they use to reach their families back home. The government keeps shutting down access to the outside world, so the refugees search constantly for new ways to connect, new lifelines. Their host, an American missionary, excuses himself to check on his kids, who are playing inside with the Iranians\u2019 children.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">That\u2019s when Fred asks the \u201cwhat if\u201d questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">What if the <a href=\"https:\/\/mei.edu\/publication\/iranian-revolution-february-1979\/\">Islamic Revolution of 1979<\/a> hadn\u2019t happened? There would have been no hostage crisis, no nuclear program, perhaps no decades of animosity between Iran and the West. No mass killings of dissidents. No wave of refugees flooding from the Middle East into Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-holder\">\n<div class=\"oembed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Did You Know: The Iranian Hostage Crisis | Encyclopaedia Britannica\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y23CUNtA8uM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">But \u201cwould I know Jesus?\u201d Fred asks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\">The three Iranian Christians are part of what researcher David Garrison calls \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wind-House-Islam-Drawing-Muslims\/dp\/1939124034\">A Wind in the House of Islam<\/a>\u201d that began soon after the revolution. As Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guard enforced a strict interpretation of Islam, interest in Christianity rose. The country went from fewer than 500 Christian converts to countless thousands meeting in secret, underground churches, Garrison wrote in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wind-House-Islam-Drawing-Muslims\/dp\/1939124034\">2014 book<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class=\"inline-ad\">\n\t\t\t<promotion-zone zone-id=\"59619\" class=\"ad instory\"><\/promotion-zone>\n\t\t\t<promotion-zone alt-zone-id=\"59698\" class=\"ad instory mobile\"><\/promotion-zone>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Two years later, waves of Iranians, fleeing political and religious persecution, began a dangerous and deadly <\/span><span class=\"s1\">exodus into Turkey, then Greece. From there they spread across the European Union, Scandinavia and the British Isles as they petitioned for asylum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Many, including Fred, brought their Christian faith to the post-Christian continent. Decades later, Birmingham gave birth to Osbourne, the self-proclaimed \u201cPrince of Darkness,\u201d and his heavy metal band, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blacksabbath.com\/\">Black Sabbath<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Now, nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/visualisations\/censusareachanges\/E08000025\">one-third of Birmingham\u2019s residents claim Islam<\/a> as their faith, making them the largest religious group in the city. Their parents and grandparents came from Pakistan, Bangladesh and other former British colonies to fill labor shortages after World War II. In recent years, Birmingham has welcomed refugees from war-torn nations including Sudan, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Iran. The camaraderie can lead to discussions about Christ, he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Iranians are among \u201cthe most hospitable people I\u2019ve ever met,\u201d C.M. says. \u201cThey\u2019re so community centric. We\u2019ve had to learn that. Any time you go over to somebody\u2019s house, or whenever they come to ours, it\u2019s basically a minimum four-hour gathering. We have adapted and really enjoy the amount of time that we get together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Faith through dystopia and dreams<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">In addition to running, the missionary and the Iranians have bonded over their love of movies, especially \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0816692\/\">Interstellar<\/a>,\u201d Christopher Nolan\u2019s mind-bending epic from 2014 about mankind\u2019s flight from a dying Earth and its search for a new home. The film has become a running gag in the missionary\u2019s home. Whenever there\u2019s a spare moment, an Iranian Christian inevitably asks, \u201cCan we start \u2018Interstellar\u2019?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-holder\">\n<div class=\"oembed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Interstellar (2014) | Original Theatrical Trailer 3 | Paramount Movies\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0vxOhd4qlnA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The dystopian movie\u2019s plot and its hopeful conclusion resonate with Iranian Christ-seekers, as do their own dreams. Since 2018, Iranians interviewed by the <i>Chronicle<\/i> have described visions of the cross and dreams about Jesus that played a role in their conversion.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">For Iliya and Naghme, \u201cwhat really drew us in was the way Christians treated us,\u201d Iliya says. \u201cWe saw kindness, support and genuine care in the people around us. As they studied the Bible with their new friends, \u201cwe were inspired by the teachings of Jesus \u2014 especially about loving others, forgiving people, helping those in need and having faith during difficult times. \u2026 Life is still not perfect, but we feel like we have more direction, purpose and comfort now than before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The gospel message appeals to those who grow up practicing Iran\u2019s state religion, Shia Islam, Garrison writes in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wind-House-Islam-Drawing-Muslims\/dp\/1939124034\">A Wind in the House of Islam<\/a>.\u201d Unlike Sunni Muslims, Shiites believe that spiritual and political authority resides in a lineage of imams descended from the prophet Muhammad\u2019s daughter, Fatima. Most Shiites believe in a divinely ordained line of 12 imams, the last of which disappeared after his birth. That\u2019s what she believed until political persecution forced her to flee Iran. She spent time in Istanbul, Turkey, where a friend gave her a Bible. During a health crisis that required surgery, Bita prayed to God and recovered. She moved to Birmingham and got a job in customer service. She studied her Bible with Christians and learned more about the faith, including the nature of the Trinity.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote\"><p><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIn Iran, they told us that Christians have three gods. &#8230; I never thought Christianity could be like this.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Three years ago, she was baptized. Would you do that for us?\u201d asks Graham Vallis, a British Christian, as he prays with one hand on the shoulder of his Iranian brother. In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Leviticus%2025%3A8-55&amp;version=ESV\">book of Leviticus<\/a>, God instructed his people to observe a year in which debts are forgiven, land is returned to its original owners, and slaves are set free.
