Rain pounded the A-frame, wood-slat roof of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bransonchurchofchrist.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Branson Church of Christ\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> auditorium. Another minister, slated for the Saturday night spot, contracted meningitis and was hospitalized just before the lectureship. Organizers asked Green, who also teaches for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleinstituteofmissouri.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bible Institute of Missouri,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to fill in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class=\"inline-ad\">\n\t\t\t<promotion-zone zone-id=\"59619\" class=\"ad instory\"><\/promotion-zone>\n\t\t\t<promotion-zone alt-zone-id=\"59698\" class=\"ad instory mobile\"><\/promotion-zone>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the impromptu request and the noisy weather, Green preached fervently, quoting from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=ephesians%205&amp;version=NKJV\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ephesians 5:15-16<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as he warned about Satan\u2019s use of distractions to tear believers\u2019 focus away from God: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSee then that you walk carefully, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re in a battle for our spiritual lives,\u201d Green said. \u201cThe devil does not take a day off.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-holder\">\n<div class=\"oembed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Satan wants you | Brent Green | SMSBL &amp;apos;26\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/prVB3dDECFk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thunderstorms pelted this tourist town in the Ozark Mountains throughout the week. But the weather didn\u2019t stop the 40-member Branson congregation from offering eight days of gospel preaching by 29 ministers, seven congregational singing sessions and six fellowship meals. Nearly 300 church members came for the kickoff service on Sunday, and an average of 200 attended throughout the week, representing nearly 90 congregations in 14 states, organizers said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speakers at the Show Me State Bible Lectures put heavy emphasis on Scripture, in keeping with the state\u2019s unofficial nickname. The \u201cShow Me State\u201d is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sos.mo.gov\/archives\/history\/slogan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thought to come from an 1899 speech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Missouri Rep. Willard Duncan Vandiver. \u201cFrothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me,\u201d Vandiver said. \u201cI am from Missouri. Costs, including housing speakers and providing meals, are close to $25,000.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class=\"inline-ad\">\n\t\t\t<promotion-zone zone-id=\"59619\" class=\"ad instory\"><\/promotion-zone>\n\t\t\t<promotion-zone alt-zone-id=\"59698\" class=\"ad instory mobile\"><\/promotion-zone>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that price tag in mind, launching the event was a leap of faith, Kidwell said. But soon after the church announced the first lectures, a real estate agent approached the leaders about buying a piece of land that the congregation owned but wasn\u2019t using. Churches across the Show Me State and beyond contribute to keep the lectures going.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The schedule alternates between afternoon and evening start times, allowing participants to enjoy Branson\u2019s activities. As Pearce prepared to speak on \u201cDealing with Disagreement,\u201d the minister for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/auroracoc.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aurora Church of Christ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Missouri found himself revising and rewriting his thoughts continually, eventually leading to self-doubt. Then he recalled Noah Olson\u2019s sermon from the previous afternoon on \u201cHow to Love Myself\u201d and Cory Orr\u2019s on \u201cWorry.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWas I even listening?\u201d Pearce asked himself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class=\"inline-ad\">\n\t\t\t<promotion-zone zone-id=\"59619\" class=\"ad instory\"><\/promotion-zone>\n\t\t\t<promotion-zone alt-zone-id=\"59698\" class=\"ad instory mobile\"><\/promotion-zone>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his sermon, Pearce used the example from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=philippians%204&amp;version=NKJV\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philippians 4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Euodia and Syntyche, two Christian women in the midst of disagreement. I take a lot of notes in the margins.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even in the digital age, the teens prefer to read \u2014 and make notes in \u2014 paper copies of God\u2019s Word. Although there are multiple Bible apps available, \u201cI just get distracted\u201d when using a phone to read Scripture, said Nolan Heavin, also 18.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI got the chance to ink up my Bible. I take a lot of notes in the margins.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavin and his family have attended the lectures all 10 years. His sister, Grace, 14, said that the lectures give her a chance \u201cto see a bunch of friends that I don\u2019t get to see a lot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nolan, a recent high school grad, plans to study at the Bible Institute of Missouri and visit Africa this summer.
