Notable here is Leonard Allen\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4bSgzIc\">\u201cIn the Great Stream: Imagining Churches of Christ in the Christian Tradition.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Paul Alan Smith\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4bSS65r\"><strong>\u201cA Burden Too Heavy: An Invitation to the Spiritual Discipline of Confession,\u201d<\/strong><\/a> a revision of his Fuller Theological Seminary dissertation, follows in this same trajectory. Smith, a minister and lifelong member of Churches of Christ, offers biblically minded readers no fewer than four Scriptural applications of confession.<\/p>\n<p>Three of these are positive in nature, meaning that participants claim and affirm that which they confess: their faith in God, their beliefs about him and their trust in his faithfulness during seasons of lament and struggle.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n\n<hr \/>\n<p>A fourth biblical application, the confession of sin, is negative in that Christians acknowledge sin\u2019s presence in order to seek forgiveness for it. (A fifth type of confession, Smith adds, is the use of formal creeds or statements of faith in certain Christian traditions.)<\/p>\n<p>The second and third sections of \u201cA Burden Too Heavy\u201d are aimed at a general Christian audience. Part two overviews the biblical and historical evidence for confession in the Christian faith and includes a timely case study on German Confessing Church leader Dietrich Bonhoeffer.<\/p>\n<p>Having demonstrated the biblical warrant for the discipline, Smith turns his attention in part three to its effects, exploring confession\u2019s blessings for individual Christians and church communities alike.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class=\"inline-ad\">\n\t\t\t<promotion-zone zone-id=\"59619\" class=\"ad instory\"><\/promotion-zone>\n\t\t\t<promotion-zone alt-zone-id=\"59698\" class=\"ad instory mobile\"><\/promotion-zone>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<p>It is part one, however, where Smith makes his most direct appeal to readers within Churches of Christ. Across two chapters, he briefly overviews the history of our movement and its implications for our practice \u2014 or lack thereof \u2014 of confession.<\/p>\n<p>Although there are some relevant, recent works missing from Smith\u2019s bibliography, his overall interpretation of our backstory is convincing and his invitation to join him in confession compelling.<\/p>\n<p>A discussion guide rounds out this volume and makes an already accessible work even more useful.
